This recent commissioned work for ‘Ninaivu: Tamil Memory Archive’ was prepared in response to the question ‘What does Tamilness mean to you?’ This question elicits many feelings, often complex, interconnected and evolving. Tamilness to me is history in the soil and the water, ocean wide and canyon deep. It is what I cultivate together with my chosen community, representing a place of warmth, rootedness, learning and growth in my life. It is protecting what we have made together and resisting the violent forces that ty to pry it from our fingers.
